Export container handling at Chittagong Port had a 16.40 per cent decline in July over June as a result of disturbances brought on by several issues, such as internet outages and student protests centred around quota reform.
Import container handling held steady despite the decline in export activity. The handling and transportation of export items have been greatly impacted, though, and things havethe situation has not yet returned to normal. Exporters and port officials are concerned about the growing backlog of export containers.
Twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, or 59,845 loaded export containers and 114,455 loaded import containers were handled in July, according to Chattogram port data. In the preceding month, the port handled 114,591 TEUs of loaded import containers and 69,662 TEUs of loaded export goods.
The number shows a decrease in loaded export container handling from June to July of 9,817 TEUs, or 16.40 per cent. However, there was a little increase of 136 TEUs in import container handling in July.
In July of this year, export container handling increased by 253 TEUs compared to July of 2023, while import container handling increased by 1,070 TEUs.
