As the gas crisis deepens in Bangladesh, the Government, with effect from 12 April, has started rationing gas supply to all the industries for a period of 15 days.
Media reports maintained this while adding garment makers are apprehensive this would affect the work and the output of the sector, which is considered the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy and accounts for more than 80 per cent of export earnings.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, a garment maker stated, “…Garment factories have deadlines to deliver international orders before the week-long Eid vacation begins,” even as reacting to the Government’s decision on gas rationing, Director of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association Saleudhzaman Khan, reportedly, maintained, “This is horrible news. Never had in the past any Government in the country officially decided to cut the gas supply to the industries.”
As per reports, industries in Bangladesh consume around 16 per cent of the gas supplied annually, while the household-level gas consumption is about 13 per cent.
