The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads, and Railways urged the relevant authorities on Thursday to provide RMG employees an eight-day break over Eid-ul-Fitr.
In a statement signed by President Shahid Mia and General Secretary Ashish Kumar Dey, the committee urged the government and the authorities of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to take action for the sake of the safe return of vacationers during Eid.
According to the statement, nearly one crore people leave Dhaka during Eid and among them, 35 lakh are garment workers. The road, rail and water transport sectors cannot transport one crore homebound passengers within one week before Eid-ul-Fitr as it causes chaos and public suffering on roads and railways.
The RMG employees can gradually return to their home village to avoid such destruction, the statement stated.
