Close on heels of Bangladesh garment exporters calling upon the Government to make available another stimulus package so as to mitigate the economic fallouts of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has underlined his Government would consider a fresh round of stimulus plan for the sector.
Inaugurating an event on 12 December (Saturday), Tipu Munshi, who is also an ex-President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said that the Government would consider offering another stimulus package for the garment industry if the situation deteriorates due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We have to protect the apparel trade and it is for the country’s economy, underlined the Commerce Minister.
It may be mentioned here that BGMEA on 7 December demanded fresh stimulus package to pay workers’ wages for a few more months as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is taking toll on the garment industry.
Garment sector, which employs millions, is the driver of the economy; so, to save it from collapse and protect workers, we request the Government to provide policy support including a new package, reportedly maintained BGMEA President, Dr. Rubana Huq in a virtual press conference earlier.
