Benapole land port – a very important trade channel and responsible for large volume of imports from India, especially raw materials for the industries, including the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh – is facing acute crisis of space on account of slow delivery of goods, thereby forcing at least 4,000 trucks to wait on the Indian side (Petrapole), to enter Bangladesh.
As per media reports, which cited the Deputy Director for the traffic at the Benapole port, Mamun Kabir Tarafdar, around 1 lakh tonnes of goods are currently stuck up at the land port, which is way higher than its reported handling capacity of 40,000 tonnes.
What’s more, goods arriving 10 days before and after Eid-ul-Azha are also reportedly lying at the land port subsequent to various restrictions imposed by the Government on account of COVID-19 pandemic, poor condition of the ferries and monsoon.
Now, to get rid of the situation, the Benapole Custom House has reportedly issued a public notice underlining it would auction any shipment that has been left at the port for a week.
