The Better Cotton Conference 2024, conducted in Istanbul and online, brought together stakeholders from the global cotton sector to debate key concerns and advancements in sustainability, policy, and industry practices.
The conference lasted two days and included talks on a variety of topics aimed at promoting sustainable practices and equitable growth in the cotton business. The conference’s four main themes were putting people first, driving change at the field level, understanding policy and industry challenges, and reporting on data and traceability.
The first takeaway was to distinguish between ‘idea’ and ‘context’. While a global vision for transformation in cotton farming communities is critical, it is also vital to recognise local realities and challenges.
Speakers emphasised the need of understanding both broad sustainability goals and specific local circumstances and limits, such as access to healthcare and education.
The event concluded by emphasising the importance of collaboration, creativity, and inclusivity in crafting a sustainable future for the textile industry, with Better Cotton leading the drive for transformative change.
