Mongla Port, the country’s second-largest seaport, earned Taka 319 crore in income during the fiscal year 2023-24.
Mongla Port Authority (MPA) authorities reported that Taka 302 crore in revenue was collected in the fiscal year 2022-23, while Taka 319 crore was generated in the fiscal year 2023-24, representing a 28.55 per cent increase over the previous fiscal year.
Md. Makruzzaman, deputy director of MPA, said that 827 ships landed in the 2022-23 fiscal year, while 846 ships arrived in the 2023-24 fiscal year, exceeding the previous year by 19 ships.
He stated that 99.05 lakh metric tonnes of cargo were handled in FY 2022-23, while 108.68 lakh metric tonnes were handled in FY 2023-24. He also stated that 26,583 TEU containers were handled in FY 2022-23, and 31,044 TEU containers were handled in FY 2023-24.
However, he stated that a total of 846 foreign commercial ships landed in the fiscal year 2023-24.
When contacted, Rear Admiral Shahin Rahman said that five projects are currently underway, including the modernisation of waste and oil removal management, the procurement of vessels for Mongla Port, the dredging of the Inner Bar of the Pashur channel, the upgrading of Mongla Port, and the construction of two incomplete jetties at Mongla Port (via PPP).
The MPA chief said, now Mongla Port is playing a vital role in the overall economic development of the South Western region and the country.
A big number of new mills and industries have been established around the port, resulting in greater commerce and trade, he stated, adding that after the five projects are completed, income will grow in the fiscal year 2024-25.
