The Government has established an inter-ministerial committee to lease state-run textile mills, predominantly non-operational, to private investors with the aim of resuming production.
According to a notification from the textiles and jute ministry, the 10-member committee, led by the additional secretary (textile) to the ministry, will provide advice to the Government and play a key role in finalizing the conditions for the leasing process and reviewing applications.
Textiles and Jute Secretary Md Abdur Rauf stated, “We want to begin with three mills.”
Currently, there are 25 textile mills under the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMC), with nine closed and one operating on a rental basis.
The BTMC is also in the process of establishing a textile village at Chittaranjan Cotton Mills.
Rauf explained that the decision to lease follows a similar approach taken for closed jute mills under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).
