Even as shipping crisis continues to plague the industry, the garment makers of Bangladesh after their meeting with shipping agents, freight forwarders and the owners of the private Inland Container Depots (ICDs) recently, are expected to call upon Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today to discuss on the issue even as they requested the Government to step in to address the deepening container scarcity.
As per reports, scarcity of empty containers and vessels and congestion at transhipment ports have given rise to severe crisis thereby hitting export of cargoes, especially to the major export destinations of Europe and USA even as empty containers from these two places are, reportedly, taking time to return to Bangladesh due to slow unloading there.
Meanwhile speaking to the media, the First Vice-President of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Mohammad Hatem, reportedly, underlined cargoes are piling up at the Chittagong Port but there are no empty containers and, in some cases, when containers are available, there is vessel crisis.
