Denmark has announced plans to develop a strategic sectoral partnership with Bangladesh focused on advancing the circular economy, with a particular emphasis on the ready-made garments (RMG) industry. During the third round of political consultations held at the Padma Guest House in Dhaka, Danish officials expressed their commitment to support Bangladesh’s sustainable economic growth, especially through green and innovative practices within the RMG sector.
As part of this cooperation, Denmark also allocated an additional US $ 5 million to aid Bangladesh’s democratic transition and bolster climate action efforts. The joint discussions, led by Bangladesh’s Director General (West Europe and EU) Md Abul Hasan Mridha and Danish Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Asia, Oceania, Latin America, and the Caribbean Ambassador Thomas Lund-Sorensen, highlighted the importance of sustainable development and green technology in strengthening Bangladesh’s textile industry.
The Danish Government reaffirmed its ongoing support to Bangladesh’s climate change initiatives and emphasised the role of green energy in transforming the RMG sector. Both nations agreed to explore opportunities for collaboration in water resource management, the blue economy, and renewable energy projects that could reduce the carbon footprint of Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing hubs.
In particular, they discussed establishing a Joint Trade and Investment Committee aimed at facilitating market access and attracting investments to modernise the RMG industry through sustainable practices. Bangladesh also sought Denmark’s assistance in leveraging the EU’s GSP+ facility beyond 2029, which could significantly enhance exports and promote eco-friendly manufacturing.
Bangladesh appreciated Denmark’s longstanding development cooperation, especially in areas like climate resilience and maritime sector development, both crucial for sustaining the RMG industry amid global environmental challenges. The discussions also covered expanding educational and cultural exchanges to foster mutual understanding and technical knowledge transfer.
This renewed cooperation signals a strategic move toward greener, more sustainable practices in Bangladesh’s RMG industry, aiming to improve environmental standards while boosting economic competitiveness on the global stage.
