In Gazipur, a group of garment workers blocked a section of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway this morning, calling for an extension of their Eid vacation from 10 days to 12 days. The protest, which began around 8 am at Hotapara, involved employees from Utah Knitting and Dyeing Ltd.
The factory management had announced a 10-day holiday for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, consistent with practices adopted by other organisations across the country. However, the workers sought a longer break, leading them to take to the highway in protest.
Authorities, including the Joydebpur Police Station, intervened and were able to disperse the demonstrators approximately one-and-a-half hours later, allowing traffic to resume on the vital route. Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim confirmed the clearance of the blockage and the return to normalcy on the highway.
