The GSKOP or Garment Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad, which is an alliance of 20 workers’ associations, has called for paying the workers’ wages and Eid bonus by 10 May.
As per reports, Abdul Wahed and Karmul Ahsan, the joint coordinators of GSKOP, in a statement, underlined that even though only a few days are left for the holy festival of Eid-ul Fitr, more than 75 per cent factories were yet to disburse wages for the month of April even as over 30 per cent factories were yet to pay Eid bonus, they alleged.
The labour leaders, reportedly, further stated that some reports indicate that many factories were unlikely to pay the festival allowance and wages before the Eid while adding that despite the coronavirus pandemic, garment workers kept garment manufacturing units operational by risking their wellbeing even as they maintained basic wage of one month and bonus should be paid by Monday while also demanding announcement of at least a seven-day alternative leave for the garment workers.
