
The top apparel product category, trousers, imported by the European Union has marked a value-wise surge in 2017 by 1.09 per cent. However, trousers got a boost in volumes also.
The EU imported 1,126.42 million kg (up 1.35%) of trousers in 2017 as against 1,111.38 million kg of trousers in 2016. Notably, Bangladesh is the biggest supplier of trousers to the EU, beating China by more than a 70-million-kg difference.
Bangladesh exported 347 million kg (up 2%) of trousers to the EU last year while China could manage to export just 276.18 million kg in the segment, marking a decline of 4.22 per cent on a yearly note.
Chinese exporters are significantly raising their prices which were falling a year earlier and, as a result, they are losing market shares.
On the other hand, India and Vietnam too noted an escalation in trousers export to the EU by 1.44 per cent and 3.13 per cent, respectively.
However, only Vietnam witnessed growth (up 5.76%) in value terms of trouser export, generating € 694 million revenues, whereas China (€ 3.35 billion), Bangladesh (€ 4.63 billion) and India (€ 654 million), all three exporting destinations fell by 3.64 per cent, 0.08 per cent and 2.42 per cent, respectively.
