Apex Bangladesh garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has called upon the Government to increase the gas price in phases rather than going for a steep and sudden hike which will be difficult to withstand in view of the existing volatile domestic and global economic situation.
The garment makers’ body has reportedly written a letter in this direction recently, addressed to the Energy Adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and State Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, in which the BGMEA President Faruque Hassan also reportedly urged the Government to ensure uninterrupted and adequate power and gas supply to the industrial units for continuing production.
The BGMEA further also demanded full waiver of customs duty and value added tax (VAT) on import of energy materials for a year.
