Hundreds of workers of a Mirpur (Bangladesh)-based readymade garment factory reportedly staged a protest by blocking a key road in the area for over three hours today.
The workers were protesting against the closure of the factory without any prior notice.
According to media reports, the workers of the Trust Trouser Limited, a woven factory specialised in denim and jackets, took to the street around 9.00 am.
The workers found a notice of factory closure hanging at the factory gate when they came to report for work this morning, a garment worker named Rashida reportedly said.
The workers immediately staged a sit-in-demonstration in front of the factory and blocked the road nearby. Later, they also reportedly vandalized the manufacturing unit.
Rashida also claimed that the owners of Trust Trousers owed the workers two months’ salary and other allowances.
“We work for a living. The factory suddenly shut down without paying our due wages…We are not leaving until we get our money,” Bilkis, another worker, maintained.
The demonstration caused huge traffic congestion in Mirpur and surrounding areas.
The protesting RMG workers were still on the street as of 1 pm, Mirpur Police Station Inspector told reporters.
“Although the protesting workers are still on the road the situation is under control now. We are trying to contact the owners of the factory,” said Shahidul Islam, Inspector of Mirpur Police station.
