In what is seen as a significant development that would have a lot to do with if and when Bangladesh would make the much-awaited transition to join the big league of developing nations from the current status of a least developed county (LDC), the United Nations’ (UN) Committee for Development Policy (CDP), on 22 February (Monday) at its plenary session, would review for the second time Bangladesh’s position on three relevant indexes, pertaining to making the transition from the LDC status.
This was underlined in a media report, which further citing Economic Relations Division officials, maintained that the CDP will propose Bangladesh’s name for LDC graduation after assessing its position on the three indexes namely the human assets index, per capita Gross National Income and the economic and environmental vulnerability index, on 22-26 February even as the report maintained that if Bangladesh is able to pass the assessment, the CDP will recommend its name to the UN’s Economic and Social Council or the ECOSOC, for the Bangladesh’s transition to a developing one while the ECOSOC on its part, will reportedly, forward the same to the UN General Assembly after giving approval at a meeting, scheduled to be held next June and the UN General Assembly, giving its approval to Bangladesh as a developing country in 2026.
It may be mentioned here that transitioning to a developing nation would shorn the country of some privileges that it currently enjoys as an LDC with experts and economists underlining the same might have some impact on Bangladesh’s exports including the all-important readymade garments, which accounts for lion’s share of Bangladesh’s total exports.
