Trade via Benapole Land Port resumed today after being blocked for four days due to a lack of security amid widespread political upheaval centred on the fall of the Awami League government.
The estimated loss from the trade halt is over Taka 100 crore, according to Ravindra Singh, deputy commissioner of customs at Benapole Land Port.
On Wednesday, numerous organisations and port authorities met to overcome the standoff.
Benapole is South Asia’s largest land port and an important economic hub between India and Bangladesh. India is the second-largest import source for Bangladesh after China.
Imports from India totalled US $ 9.49 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23, with exports to the nation being US $ 2.13 billion, according to data from the Bangladesh Trade Portal and Bangladesh Bank.
India mostly exports machinery, and raw materials, among other products, whereas Bangladesh exports ready-made clothes, jute products, and other items.
According to Karthik Chandra, general secretary of the Petrapole C&F Staff Association of India, the Border Security Force has increased security along India’s border since the Hasina administration fell.
