The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged authorities to simplify customs bond services and extend policy support to help the apparel industry remain competitive in global markets.
A three-member BGMEA delegation led by Director Faisal Samad met with Mian Md. Abu Obaida, Commissioner of the Dhaka North Customs Bond Commissionerate, at his office on Tuesday (23rd September). Additional Commissioner Adip Billah and Deputy Commissioner H.M. Ahsanul Kabir were also present.
During the meeting, Faisal Samad handed over a letter signed by BGMEA President Hasan Mahmud Khan to both the Dhaka South and Dhaka North Customs Bond Commissionerates, requesting a faster, more efficient bond process for the RMG sector.
The delegation stressed that simplifying customs procedures is essential to maintaining the industry’s edge, given the global competitiveness of garment exports. They also called for reconstituting a Joint Working Committee—comprising representatives from Customs Houses, Bond Commissionerates, the National Board of Revenue, and Customs Intelligence—to resolve both short- and long-term challenges in coordination with all stakeholders.
Commissioner Obaida noted that several initiatives have already been taken to smooth export procedures and improve the business environment. He added that officials have been instructed to ensure customs services are delivered more quickly and efficiently.
Assuring full cooperation, the commissioner said, “Any issue will be resolved promptly through mutual discussions between the Dhaka North Customs Bond Commissionerate and BGMEA,” while reaffirming support for achieving the sector’s export goals.
