Garment manufacturing units that have been struggling to keep afloat following shutting down of operations subsequent to the countrywide lockdown, may soon get some respite!
As per media reports, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has permitted a limited number of industrial units to continue operations. However, there are some riders to it.
First of all, they would have to make do with limited number of workers and garment manufacturers would have to ensure workers’ accommodation, transportation while also taking care of their health and safety.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reportedly said this while participating in a video conference.
“Factory owners may continue operation with a few labourers if they can provide health safety, safe accommodation and transportation for the workers,” Hasina underlined while replying to Police Superintendent Shamsunnahar of Gazipur.
However, this respite could well be for only those that are into manufacturing of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
It may be mentioned here that the apparel manufacturing sector of Bangladesh is undergoing a lot of stress following large-scale order cancellations by buyers as well as workers’ unrest, in the wake of countrywide shutdown imposed by the Government.
