The Shipping, Textiles, and Jute Adviser, Brigadier General (Retired) M Sakhawat Hossain, has declared that Mongla Port will be undergoing major improvements to bring it up to international standards. In a meeting with senior officials at the Mongla Port Authority, he described the Government’s commitment to a number of ongoing port modernisation development projects.
According to Sakhawat, the Government is currently in the process of establishing a development agreement with China, which will make it easier to build the infrastructure improvements that are required for the new projects. “Mongla Port is poised to become one of South Asia’s key connectivity hubs upon completion of these upgrades,” he said, highlighting the port’s strategic geographic significance.
In addition to serving Bangladesh, the port has the potential to be an important transit hub for other nations like Nepal and Bhutan, the expert stressed. He continued by saying, “Mongla Port is essential to our economy, especially in boosting trade in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector, which is a key component of Bangladesh’s export market.”
Members of the Authority, including department heads and other high officials, attended the meeting, which was presided over by MPA Chairman Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman.
After the conference, Sakhawat saw a number of facilities along the Pashur Channel, such as the port’s permanent jetty area, waste management systems, and the Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System (VTMIS).
Sakhawat said the Government is actively seeking to restart defunct jute mills through private leasing deals in answer to a question about job chances. He promised that when the mills were revived, former employees would be the first to be given access to job openings.
The conversion of Mongla Port into a contemporary commercial hub is anticipated to greatly improve the nation’s economic landscape as the Government proceeds with its ambitions, especially for the crucial RMG sector.
