Even as the Bangladesh Government has declared a 7-day nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, businesses are, reportedly, finding it difficult to instantly implement emergency measures for the smooth continuation of manufacturing operations.
Nevertheless, notwithstanding the problems, industrialists have agreed with the Government’s decision, underlined media reports.
Speaking to the media, the current President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Dr. Rubana Huq, reportedly, said it’s not possible for factory owners to construct hospital facilities overnight even as she underlined the garment makers have already taken appropriate measures while almost all RMG units have established isolation centres for their workers in the factory premises even as Chairman of Envoy Group (a leading garment exporter), Kutub Uddin Ahmed, said factories have been instructed to remain operational during the lockdown.
As for the transportation of garment workers, Dr. Rubana stated restriction on public transport will not have much of an impact as most workers live near the respective manufacturing units even as she added that some factories had arranged transportation for their workers during the initial outbreak last year and this facility is continuing still.
