Container handling at Bangladesh’s premier seaport of Chittagong has been decreasing continuously for the last three months, which has resulted in decline in revenue collection.
Media reports claimed this while adding the port handled around 97,538 TEUs of import containers and 59,331 TEUs of export containers in October, registering a decline by 4 per cent and 7 per cent respectively compared to that in September.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, traders in the country reportedly underlined that the economic turmoil triggered by the Coronavirus pandemic, fallouts of Russia-Ukraine war and dollar crisis, all combined to pull down the export and import volumes.
It may be mentioned here that Chittagong is Bangladesh’s principal seaport and is responsible for handling lion’s share of imports and export, including the all-important apparel shipments.
