The all-important Chittagong Port — Chittagong Port is the national gateway and, reportedly, handles over 90 per cent of Bangladesh’s exports and imports and about 98 per cent of container trade — is once again facing container congestion as importers did not take delivery of containers from the port during the Eid holidays even if the port authorities had made all preparations to ensure uninterrupted activities and kept the port open during the four-day holiday period.
Reports claimed this while adding that as a result the port yards are now crowded with containers, creating a huge congestion even as the port authorities, reportedly, maintained that the number of deliveries decreased abnormally before Eid and on the eve of Eid, delivery of containers reduced by about 90 per cent compared to normal times while on the day of Eid, no container was delivered as no importers showed up to take delivery of containers.
Meanwhile, the importers and traders on their part have, reportedly, maintained that during the Eid holidays all warehouses and factories remained closed and, if they took the deliveries, they would not have any place to keep the containers.
