The new cargo terminal at Benapole Land Port, which is scheduled to open in October, has been finished by port officials in Jashore. Over 300 crore Taka was spent on the project.
Once operational, the port will have the capacity to manage 1,200–1,500 cargo vehicles concurrently, resulting in reduced hassles, enhanced trade efficiency, and increased revenue collection.
Between 7,000 and 8,000 metric tonnes of goods are delivered to Benapole Port from India each day; however, majority of these goods are stored in open areas because of space restrictions. Indian cars also take longer to unload because of space constraints. Users of the port believe that the new terminal will solve these issues.
The port’s revenue has increased dramatically, rising from Taka 2,425 crore in the fiscal year 2011–12 to Taka 5,786 crore in the fiscal year 2022–23. In the same time frame, imports rose from 12 lakh tonnes to over 20.35 lakh tonnes, a significant increase as well.
The goal of the 24-acre terminal project was to increase port capacity and reduce traffic congestion. The project’s construction and land acquisition expenditures came to a total of Taka 329 crore.
The new complex has all the amenities of today, such as parking spaces, goods and utility buildings, fire stations and advanced scanning and surveillance systems.
Project Director Hasan Ali expressed confidence that the terminal will be ready for inauguration by October, with the final phase being the connection of electricity.
Shamsur Rahman, president of the Benapole Customs C&F Agents Association, praised the terminal’s infrastructure, expecting it to reduce congestion and increase government revenue.
