To enable Bangladesh’s smoother transition to a developing nation, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan on 15 June (Tuesday) called upon Switzerland to consider extending the ‘Everything but Arms’ (EBA) scheme under its GSP programme for 10 years.
The BGMEA chair made this request when Nathalie Chuard, wBangho is the Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, came to meet Faruque Hassan at his office, accompanied by head of political, economic and cultural affairs Thomas Baumgartner and discussed issues pertinent to the Bangladesh apparel sector, and the progress that it has made in the areas of social and environmental sustainability.
According to reports, the garment makers’ body sought support from the embassy on the need for unified code of conduct for social audits and collaboration to promote the untold stories of the industry’s transformation even as they also discussed issues pertaining to product diversification, need for an industry upgrade particularly in the area of skills and efficiency enhancement and technological expertise.
Faruque Hassan was, reportedly, joined by First Vice-President of BGMEA, Syed Nazrul Islam and Vice-President Md. Shahidullah Azim, during the meeting with the Swiss Ambassador.
