The United Nations Centre for Development Policy (UNCDP) could delay assessing Bangladesh for graduating to a developing nation from the current status of least developed country (LDC), by 3 to 5 years.
This was stated by economic expert, Mustafizur Rahman, who is a distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), claimed media reports.
Considering the fallout of COVID-19, which has resulted in economic slowdown and losses globally, the UNCDP could delay the assessment to 2024, which was earlier supposed to be done in 2021.
In case the same is not feasible, Mustafizur maintained, UNCDP may consider alternative measures.
In such a scenario, Bangladesh would continue to enjoy the duty-free benefits, while exporting goods to the developing and developed nations, for a longer period of time.
