Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, who is the Energy Adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has recently claimed the power crisis in Bangladesh will end once the coal-fired power plants in Banshkhali (in Chittagong) and Matarbari (in Cox’s Bazar) start operating.
This is as per media reports which added Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury came up with the observations after visiting the coal-fired SS Power-I Plant in Banshkhali — the 1,320 megawatt plant is a joint venture of six companies of S Alam Group, HTG Development Group Co Ltd of China and SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation of China, as per the officials of S Alam Group — and once operational, it will be the largest coal-fired power plant in the private sector of Bangladesh.
When operational, power generation from the plants will reportedly take Bangladesh’s electricity production capacity to nearly 30,000 megawatts.
