A high-level delegation from Bangladesh is scheduled to visit the United States next week to engage in discussions regarding the ongoing tariff challenges, as announced by Commerce Ministry Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin.
During a view-exchange meeting titled US’s 37 Percent Tariff: Challenges, Opportunities, and Government’s Actions,” held at the Secretariat Media Center on Wednesday, 16th April, Bashiruddin emphasised the importance of addressing the tariff situation, particularly given that the tariff has been temporarily suspended for 90 days. He noted that the United States remains Bangladesh’s largest export market, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
The delegation will include key figures such as Lutfey Siddiqi, the chief adviser’s special envoy for international affairs, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, and the finance adviser. The aim of the visit is to engage with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to explore both tariff and non-tariff frameworks and identify actionable steps moving forward.
Bashiruddin expressed optimism about the upcoming discussions, stating that the delegation intends to clarify the US stance on tariffs and formulate a strategic action plan. He also mentioned that he plans to visit the US himself following the delegation’s return to present a comprehensive proposal to the US Commerce Secretary.
Despite current uncertainties, Bashiruddin reassured stakeholders that the situation is not perceived as alarming, noting potential increases in export orders due to the competitive disadvantage faced by China, which is subject to tariffs exceeding 100 percent.
Addressing concerns over India’s transshipment facility cancellation, Bashiruddin acknowledged that this could lead to an additional business cost of Taka 2,000 crore. However, he confirmed the Government’s commitment to improving cargo handling procedures, as guided by the chief adviser, in his new role as an adviser to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
