Workers at a local factory staged a protest on Thursday and demanded compensation for the families of deceased colleagues, medical care for the injured, reliable transportation and a one-day holiday for the facility.
For about two hours, protesters stopped the Dhaka-Aricha highway while demanding for improved working conditions and factory management support. “There are no vehicles for workers,” one employee said, expressing frustration over the lack of transportation.
Similar worries were expressed by another female employee, who emphasised the pressing nature of their demands. “We are protesting on the road this morning and have halted our work.” She stated that the factory’s transportation infrastructure was insufficient and that “we need compensation for the deceased and proper medical care for the injured.”
The situation attracted the attention of local authorities. Factory officials and the Dhammarai Industrial Police-1, led by Superintendent Sarwar Alam, intervened to negotiate with the workers. The police confirmed that they were able to persuade the demonstrators to end the blockade without further incident.
In response to the protest, a general holiday has been declared at the factory for Thursday. This marks a significant move to address the workers’ grievances and restore order at the facility.
