Workers of AA Knit Spin Mills Limited staged a blockade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Jainabazar area of Sreepur upazila, Gazipur, yesterday evening, protesting unpaid wages and leave allowances for June.
The demonstration, which began around 7:30 pm, saw approximately 5,500 workers taking positions on both sides of the highway, halting traffic in both directions and causing significant congestion. Witnesses reported that the workers also vandalized property, removing chairs and tables from the factory premises, setting fire to the highway, and damaging the factory interior.
Gazipur Industrial Police Inspector Abdul Latif told The Daily Star at around 9:00 pm that authorities are in contact with the factory owners to resolve the issue swiftly and lift the blockade. He confirmed that the workers are upset over pending salary payments and leave dues.
Maona Highway Police Station OC Ayub Ali also stated at 9:12 pm that efforts are underway to restore normal traffic flow and address the situation. Attempts to reach the factory management for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
