Two readymade garment (RMG) factories, Zihan Garments Industries Ltd and Cross War Garment, have been closed indefinitely following protests by workers demanding payment of outstanding wages and Eid bonuses.
The protests, which have been ongoing for several days, escalated on Sunday night when factory authorities posted notices at the gates announcing the closure. Upon arriving at work, the employees discovered the notices and began demonstrating outside the factories, seeking to take their grievances to the streets.
However, the workers were met with barriers from law enforcement, leading them to retreat. In response to the situation, additional police personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order.
Mominul Islam, superintendent of police for Ashulia Industrial Police-1, confirmed that discussions are underway with factory owners in an effort to resolve the issues and reopen the facilities.
