The National Garment Workers’ Federation (NGWF) has called for opening the Dhaka Export Processing Zone-based Italian readymade garment factory, A-One BD Limited, while also demanding salaries and allowance of the 1,100 workers, which reportedly remain in arrears for 1 year.
This was underlined by the NGWF President Amirul Haque Amin on 5 January (Tuesday) at a press conference.
Maintaining that the said factory was closed on 18 April 2020 without paying the salaries and allowance of about 1,100 workers, the labour leader, reportedly, said that all concerned including the Department of Factories and Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) have been informed about this but to no avail.
The NGWF President also sought intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and decided to present a memorandum to the Prime Minister in this direction on 18 January.
As per reports, the workers’ four-point demand in this direction includes reopening the factory, taking action to prevent the factory owner from fleeing Bangladesh, making arrangements for legal compensation and ensuring jobs of 1,100 workers by meeting their salaries and allowance that remain in arrears and providing the workers with their provident fund.
