The Sustainable Textiles of the Asian Region (STAR) Network, a prominent coalition of garment industry associations across Asia, has unveiled a leadership transition aimed at enhancing its global influence. Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, the Executive President of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), has been appointed as the new Chairman, while Dr. Xiaohui Liang from the China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) steps into the role of Vice-Chairman. These appointments received unanimous approval from the STAR Board, marking a new phase for the organization.
This leadership update arrives at a critical juncture as STAR broadens its scope to meet the rising demands of the international apparel market. The positions of Chairman and Vice-Chairman, which rotate periodically, are pivotal in providing strategic oversight, aligning efforts with the STAR Secretariat, and acting as key representatives to global brands, development agencies, and other stakeholders.
Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, a highly regarded industry veteran and founding member of STAR, offers extensive expertise in advocacy, sustainable manufacturing practices, and international cooperation. In his new capacity, he aims to strengthen cross-border partnerships and advance STAR’s mission of promoting sustainability and equitable supply chain practices. Ehsan expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It is a privilege to assume this leadership role at such an important moment for STAR. I am eager to foster deeper collaborations among producer associations and amplify our collective voice on sustainability issues.”
Dr. Xiaohui Liang, representing CNTAC, is recognized for her work in sustainable innovation and regional policy coordination. Her efforts have significantly contributed to knowledge exchange and the elevation of sustainability standards across Asian textile and garment sectors. Liang highlighted the importance of unity within STAR, noting, “Our strength lies in our diversity and shared purpose. I am dedicated to supporting the Secretariat in expanding our platform’s reach and guiding the industry towards resilience and responsible practices.”
The new leadership is anticipated to reinforce STAR’s core objectives of promoting transparency, ethical business conduct, and sustainable development within Asia’s apparel supply chain. These appointments also aim to enhance the operational capabilities of STAR’s Regional Headquarters in Cambodia, which operates under the umbrella of the Textiles Apparel Footwear & Travel Goods Association (TAFTAC).
Dr. Ken Loo, a STAR Board Member and Secretary General of TAFTAC, welcomed the leadership changes, expressing confidence that Ehsan and Liang possess the strategic vision and industry expertise necessary to advance collaboration, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement.
Founded in 2016 with backing from the GIZ FABRIC Project, STAR Network unites nine industry associations from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Vietnam, representing over 35,000 members and an export value close to $400 billion. The organization provides a vital platform for dialogue, trust-building, and addressing shared challenges, notably those related to sustainability.
Looking forward, STAR remains dedicated to amplifying the voices of suppliers, fostering inclusive partnerships, and accelerating efforts toward a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable apparel industry throughout Asia. With its refreshed leadership, the network is well-positioned to broaden its influence and continue facilitating regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and industry advocacy.
