At a protest march in Dhaka on Friday, leaders of the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) called on the interim government to act swiftly against specific owners of garment factories who are alleged to be damaging the ready-made garment industry.
NGWF President Amirul Haque Amin presided over the demonstration, which was held outside the National Press Club. Amin emphasised throughout the occasion that certain factory owners in Ashulia and Gazipur were purposefully refusing to pay workers’ wages even though they had the means to do so. Employee dissatisfaction has resulted in protests and road blockades throughout the area as workers seek their rightful wages.
Amirul Haque Amin urged the temporary government to step in and punish factory owners who don’t pay their employees on time. During the rally, Jesmin Akter, Faridul Islam, and Rafiqul Islam, the general secretary of the NGWF, joined him in voicing their concerns.
In a show of solidarity and a demand for justice for garment workers, attendees marched along several downtown highways after the gathering.
