
A tragic incident unfolded in Gazipur and Ashulia as a garment worker lost his life, amidst clashes between RMG workers and law enforcement personnel after he was allegedly ‘shot at’ close range by the ‘Gazipur Industrial Police’.
Reports claimed this adding the turmoil also resulted in fires erupting at ABM Fashion Ltd., and Echotex Ltd., in Gazipur, with the charred remains of an unidentified individual discovered in the ABM Fashion factory.
Furthermore, another worker sustained critical injuries, reportedly from a gunshot to the head, allegedly by the Ashulia Industrial Police.
The victim, Rasel Hawlader, 26 years old and hailing from Jhalakathi, worked as an electrician at Design Express Ltd in Gazipur and resided in a dormitory in the Bason area. According to his colleague and roommate, Abu Sufian, they were returning to their dormitory after the factory was closed due to the ongoing demonstrations.
While passing through the Maleker Bari area, they witnessed the police firing upon protesters, resulting in Rasel being allegedly shot. He was promptly rushed to a local hospital in Gazipur and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In response to the workers’ protests, various sections of the Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways in Gazipur were blocked, and a police vehicle was set ablaze near the Bhogra Bypass, causing a two-hour closure of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to traffic.
