The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) convened to address critical issues within the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry. The meeting, held at the BGMEA Complex, focused on workplace safety, workers’ rights, labour law reforms, and environmental sustainability.
ILO Country Director Tuomo Poutiainen and BGMEA Administrator Anwar Hossain were key participants in the discussion, which also included BGMEA Support Committee member ANM Saifuddin.
The dialogue highlighted ongoing initiatives led by the ILO, particularly the Better Work Bangladesh program, which aims to enhance working conditions and ensure occupational safety for RMG workers. Both Poutiainen and Hossain underscored the necessity of sustained efforts to foster safer, fairer, and more sustainable workplaces within the sector.
Future collaboration between the ILO and BGMEA was also a focal point of the meeting. The two organisations discussed potential partnerships in capacity building, particularly in relation to international standards such as the European Union’s Due Diligence Directive, which seeks to hold companies accountable for human rights and environmental impacts throughout their supply chains.
Administrator Hossain noted the progress the industry has made regarding workplace safety, workers’ rights, and environmental sustainability, reiterating the sector’s commitment to continuous improvement.
Additionally, the BGMEA representatives called on the ILO to initiate projects that promote social dialogue and foster harmonious industrial relations within the RMG sector. They also urged collaboration in developing workforce skills to keep pace with advancements in artificial intelligence and technology.
