A senior official from a garments factory tragically passed away during a protest in front of the ‘Shram Bhaban’ in Bijoynagar on Sunday, as workers demanded unpaid wages and benefits. The deceased, identified as Ram Prasad Singh, 40, was a senior assistant manager at Style Craft Limited in Joydebpur, Gazipur, and originally from Fulgazi upazila in Feni.
Witnesses reported that Ram Prasad fell ill around 12:30 pm while participating in the demonstration. Initially, he was taken to Islami Bank Hospital but was later transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as his condition worsened. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 4:00 pm.
According to Amir Hossain, a section manager at Style Craft Limited, Ram Prasad had been with the company for several years. He revealed that wage payments at the factory have been irregular since 2019, with workers receiving only one month’s salary every few months. Currently, an alarming 14 months’ worth of wages remain unpaid, prompting ongoing protests. Over the past five days, around 250 workers have rallied in front of Shram Bhaban to voice their grievances.
Inspector Md Faruk, stationed at the DMCH police post, confirmed that Ram Prasad’s body had been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
