In a significant demonstration, garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur on 13th March, demanding their overdue salaries and Eid bonuses. The protest began around 11 am in the Baimile area under the Konabari police station, where workers from Swadhin Garments Factory took to the streets to voice their grievances.
According to police and local sources, the employees initially gathered in front of the factory in the Zarun area of Konabari before marching onto the highway near the Konabari flyover. The blockade led to severe traffic congestion, causing considerable inconvenience for commuters.
Law enforcement quickly responded to the situation, clearing the road and restoring traffic flow after nearly half an hour of disruption. Officer-in-Charge of Konabari Police Station, Md. Nazrul Islam, stated that the workers were scheduled to receive their salaries and Eid bonuses on 20th March. However, the protest erupted ahead of the payment date, with workers demanding immediate disbursement.
The situation has since been brought under control, and traffic has resumed as normal.
