
Forty-two people were injured when a bus carrying workers who make ready-made garments overturned in the Banani neighbourhood of Dhaka early on Friday morning. The bus, driven by Parishtan Paribahan, was carrying workers from Purbachal Apparels Limited from Dhaka to Kaliganj in Gazipur when the accident happened at around 5:30 am on the major road.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banani police station, Russell Sarwar, the driver was reportedly driving recklessly and lost control of the vehicle, leading to the bus overturning. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, and the injured workers were transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Out of the injured, six individuals are currently receiving care at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, with one person being treated at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) for a broken arm. Following initial treatment, 35 workers were released from the hospital.
Md Kamal Hossain, General Manager of Purbachal Apparels Limited, confirmed that the factory had rented the bus on a monthly basis for employee transportation and is covering the medical expenses for those injured in the accident.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety for workers in the garment industry, prompting calls for improved regulations and oversight.
