A European Union (EU) delegation is set to visit Dhaka next week for discussions with key stakeholders concerning Bangladesh’s labour sector.
The delegation will be led by Paola Pampaloni, Deputy Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific at the European External Action Service (EEAS).
Their agenda includes meetings with Government officials, including the secretaries of labour, commerce, and foreign affairs, in addition to engaging with other relevant parties.
The purpose of the visit is to assess the progress made in implementing the National Action Plan for the labour sector.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Charles Whiteley, informed the media about this objective.
The delegation is expected to arrive on 12th November.
Bangladesh has adopted a National Action Plan (2021-2026) for the labour sector, closely connected to a roadmap submitted by the government to the International Labor Organization (ILO) Governing Body in response to an Article 26 complaint.
This roadmap aims to enhance the country’s compliance with labour rights, including the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining.
In a seminar held last month in Dhaka, Ambassador Charles Whiteley emphasized that aligning labour laws with international standards would be a crucial factor for the European Parliament and the Commission when considering Bangladesh’s application for market access through the Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+).
