
Bangladesh’s ready-made garments (RMG) sector continues to lead in sustainable manufacturing, with Echotex Limited and Elite Garments Industries Ltd recently attaining the prestigious LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
Echotex Limited is a vertically integrated facility located in Kaliakoir, Gazipur, specialising in weaving, dyeing, digital and screen printing, laundry, and garment manufacturing. The company scored 92 out of 110 points under the LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 category, reflecting its commitment to sustainable practices. Echotex began garment manufacturing in 2008 and textile production in 2009, earning the National Environment Award in 2010 for its effluent treatment initiatives. The company produces apparel for international brands such as Tesco, Debenhams, Peacocks, Primark, H&M, Sainsbury’s, and Inditex.
Elite Garments Industries Ltd, established in 1981 and located in Gazipur, is a 100 per cent export-oriented knitted garment manufacturing unit with an annual turnover of US $ 65 million and 24 production lines. The company achieved LEED Platinum certification under the LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4.1 category, scoring 85 out of 110 points.
The USGBC’s LEED certification evaluates factors such as energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and the use of sustainable materials. With these recent certifications, Bangladesh now boasts 240 LEED-certified factories, including 98 with Platinum certification and 128 with Gold certification.
