The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has resolved to reopen all garment factories that were indefinitely closed during the demonstrations by garment workers advocating for a fair wage.
The decision was reached following a meeting recently that involved workers, labour organization leaders, local political figures, administration representatives, and industrial police.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan announced the decision, stating that the factories closed under Section 13/1 of the Labour Act would resume operations.
The decision was made based on the improved situation, particularly in the Ashulia area, which is now deemed peaceful as workers have not engaged in demonstrations lately.
Hassan further explained that workers have expressed interest in returning to work at garment factories in Kashimpur and Konabari in Gazipur, leading to the reopening of those facilities.
However, discussions are ongoing regarding several factories that remain closed in Mirpur, with efforts being made to facilitate their reopening.
