The apex body representing the country’s RMG sector clarified the financial implications of the recently announced minimum wages for readymade garment (RMG) workers in Bangladesh, addressing concerns regarding the adequacy of the minimum wage.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) stressed its non-involvement in the wage negotiation process, highlighting the independent functioning of the minimum wage board.
Contrary to misinformation, the trade body refrained from making any public comments on the minimum wage until the initial declaration by the wage board on 7th November.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan reiterated these points in a media statement, emphasizing that the Minimum Wage Board established the lowest minimum wages, but the actual wages remained significantly higher.
He clarified that the specified Taka 12,500 was applicable only for entry-level workers with no prior experience.
