Close on heels of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) issuing a statement to all garment manufacturing units to pay workers’ pending wages by 16 April, the apex garment manufacturers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has underlined that around 78 per cent of the garment workers have received their salary already.
Roughly 19,19,600 workers have received salary among 24,72,417 workers of BGMEA member factories, stated BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq.
The garment makers’ body further underlined that the remaining workers would get their salary by today.
Dr. Rubana claimed “We have requested all banks to cooperate with them during the Coronavirus crisis,” adding further “No worker will go without salary in March.”
Meanwhile, amidst large scale workers’ protest for wage disbursement, the DIFE has issued a statement warning those factories that fail to pay the workers by 16 April of legal action and even running the risk of their licenses being refused to be renewed again.
