At the Bangladesh Climate Action Forum 2024, international development partners, buyers, and local apparel exporters are urging the government to enact laws that favour renewable energy, especially solar power, in order to maintain Bangladesh’s access to the world market for ready-made garments (RMGs).
The symposium, which took place in Dhaka on October 10, brought attention to the pressing need for Bangladesh to raise the country’s existing 2 percent penetration rate for renewable energy.
Fouzul Kabir Khan, Energy Adviser, stressed the importance of moving to sustainable energy systems and urged corporate executives to take advantage of this critical opportunity. Lutfey Siddiqi, Special Envoy of the Chief Advisor for International Affairs, emphasised that businesses should view the climate transition as an essential part of their business strategy, not just a compliance requirement.
Ziaur Rahman, the country manager of H&M for Bangladesh, pointed out during the conversation that Bangladesh needs to increase its capacity to produce renewable energy, particularly through rooftop solar systems, since global companies are aiming for a 56% decrease in carbon emissions by 2030.
Faisal Rabbi, a World Bank energy specialist, emphasised the significance of manufacturing switching from fossil fuels to energy-efficient technologies. In order to achieve the global environmental targets through decarbonisation, he urged the private sector to take the lead.
