The two garment makers’ bodies in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), recently formed a committee jointly aimed at working on a unified code of conduct for the country’s apparel sector.
According to reports, the committee was formed at a recent meeting of the trade bodies, presided over by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan and attended amongst others by BKMEA Executive President Mohammad Hatem, Vice-Presidents Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, Akhter Hossain Apurba, Director Imran Kader Turjo; BGMEA Vice-Presidents Shahidullah Azim, Miran Ali and Director Asif Ashraf.
Meanwhile, as per a press release issued in this direction, the 11-member committee, which will carry out thorough assessment of feasibility of a common code of conduct for social audits including national laws, rules and policies and international conventions along with buyers’ code of conduct and third-party audit protocols, is headed by Miran Ali.
