State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam stated that workers will not be permitted to form trade unions in factories within Bangladesh’s Export Processing Zones (EPZ). He explained that foreign investors in the EPZ have invested under specific terms, including the prohibition of trade union activities, which cannot be violated.
In response to inquiries about allowing trade unions in the EPZs, as suggested by the European Union and the USA, the state minister stated that the government would not permit it. However, he mentioned that workers can present their demands through the welfare association, which serves as an alternative avenue for addressing their issues.
Shahriar further stated that the special economic zones will be subject to the domestic labour laws of the country, ensuring appropriate governance and protection for workers.
Regarding another question, he explained that the pilot scheme for Rohingya repatriation was initiated to initiate the process, with the UN agencies duly informed.
He emphasised the Government’s dedication to ensuring the secure and voluntary repatriation of Rohingyas. If individuals feel that the situation in Myanmar is unfavourable, they will have the option to return to Cox’s Bazar camps.
In response to another query, he clarified that no foreign country or UN agency discussed political party dialogue or election-time government matters with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Government urged them to send observers as per the Election Commission’s guidelines to ensure transparent and fair elections, resolving any concerns regarding the polls’ credibility.
