Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh has have found eight garment factories in the country at fault over the workplace safety issue, resulting in termination of their business ties with over 200 international apparel brands.
All the eight factories belong to Imam Dyeing Knitting Printing & Finishing Ind’s Limited, headquartered in capital Dhaka, Accord has said in a press release issued.
The eight factories owned by the Group are Imam Dyeing Knitting Printing & Finishing Ind’s Limited, Sam Sweaters Ltd., Imam Buttons Industries Ltd., Imam Industries Ltd. (Unit-1), Imam Industries Ltd. (Unit-2), Imam Garments Ltd., Moon Fashion Ltd., and Zakmars Fashion Ltd.
The facilities were initially inspected in 2014 for compliance with fire, electrical and structural safety hazards.
However, even after repeated warnings, the Group and its eight factories reportedly failed to cooperate in this regard and did not implement the necessary Corrective Action Plans (CAPs).
Apparel Resources tried to get in touch with Imam Dyeing Knitting Printing & Finishing Ind’s Limited at its head office in Dhaka’s Motijheel but its officials declined to comment on the issue.
As per the Accord agreement, all the signatory companies will now terminate their business relationships with the Group and its companies, the press statement mentioned.
The termination of these factories under the Accord programme comes at a month which observes the fifth anniversary of the deadly fire accident at Tazreen Fashions that killed over 111 workers back in 2012.
