Uniqlo, the Japanese fast retailer has asked its Chinese suppliers to improve factory working conditions. The action was elicited by SACOM, a Hong Kong-based advocacy group’s report on workplace safety and worker rights at Uniqlo’s apparel suppliers Dongguan Tomwell Garment Co. Ltd. and Pacific (Pan Yu) Textiles Ltd. Following the report, the retailer inspected its Chinese suppliers and found problems, including long working hours. Fast Retailing also committed to improve its monitoring system for manufacturing partners by beefing up measures to check overtime hours, tracking employee accidents and strikes, and introducing a system to monitor textile factories that supply garment plants.
