Ready-made garment (RMG) workers protesting unpaid salaries on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakair, Gazipur, were dispersed by police using batons and tear gas. In an effort to collect their unpaid pay, the workers from the now-closed Mahmud Jeans Limited stopped the highway, causing traffic jams.
Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 AKM Zahirul Islam stated that the protesters were dispersed around 11 am at the Chandra intersection, and additional police forces remained in the vicinity to maintain order. Traffic was reportedly restored shortly afterward.
Abu Taleb, the factory’s administration manager, explained that Mahmud Jeans Limited was permanently shut down on 10th October of the previous year, in accordance with labor regulations. He went on to say that the factory management has no further involvement in the situation and that the Ministry of Labour will oversee the settlement of workers’ dues.
Despite continuous requests and protests, the workers who are protesting claim that almost 2,000 people are still owed outstanding pay and dues.
